Beste vrienden,

Mijn hoop jullie te mogen begroeten in vreedzamere tijden is ijdel gebleken. Het menselijk lijden in Oekraïne gaat verder, een einde aan het conflict is nog niet in zicht en de economische gevolgen van de Russische inval worden alsmaar meer voelbaar. De energieprijzen bereiken ongekende hoogtes , de inflatie swingt de pan uit en de rente stijgt. Onze hoge staatschuld (die niet vanzelf zal verdwijnen) kan ons weer in serieuze problemen brengen. Bent u nog op zoek naar interessante vakantielectuur, dan kan ik het laatste OESO rapport over België warm aanbevelen.

Aan de keerzijde is er toch nog wel positief nieuws te rapen. Hoewel er weer alarmerende rapporten opduiken over de kwaliteit van het Vlaamse onderwijs blijft de scholingsgraad binnen België stijgen. In 1999 was 25% van de Vlamingen hooggeschoold. Tegenwoordig is dat 45% en in de leeftijdsgroep 25 tot 34 jarigen is dit zelfs 53%. Ook aan onze Ingenieurs- en bio-ingenieursfaculteiten en de Computerwetenschappen studeert deze zomer weer een nieuwe lichting ingenieurs af. Ik heet hen van harte welkom en hoop dat ze de banden met de VUB via BrEA zullen blijven cultiveren. Deze jonge ingenieurs gaan mooie carrièremogelijkheden tegemoet. Zij zullen de motoren moeten zijn die de belangrijkste problemen van de komende jaren -de klimaatverandering en de energietransitie- helpen oplossen. Het aantal ingenieurs dat afstudeert aan onze universiteiten blijft sterk achter op de noden. Ik nodig eenieder dan ook uit in zijn brede kennissenkring de ‘influencer” te zijn die de jeugd motiveert om te kiezen voor de STEM richtingen en indien mogelijk voor het ingenieursberoep.
Bij BrEA blijven we ons inspannen om de netwerking en het samenhorigheidsgevoel onder de alumni te versterken. In de voorbije periode organiseerden we verschillende activiteiten. Binnen het kader van het werkveld: Career Development Events, How to financially compare job offers en Introduction to the art of communication. Langs de culturele/ontspannende kant: engineers@themovies, yoga en work/life balance, het alumni event materials en een geleid bezoek aan het gerenoveerde Braem gebouw, het rectoraat. Noteer alvast volgende activiteiten in uw agenda: zaterdag 24 september BBQ op de Campus Etterbeek, woensdag 26 oktober symposium.

Dear friends,

Last time I expressed the hope that I would see you again in more peaceful times. This hope was in vain. The human suffering in Ukraine continues and an end to this conflict is not yet in sight. The economic consequences of the war become ever more visible. Energy prices are reaching unknown heights, inflation is soaring and interest rates are on the rise. Our high public debt (that will not disappear by itself) can soon become a serious problem once more. If you are still looking for interesting literature during your vacation, I can recommend you the latest OCDE report on Belgium:

But not all news is bad. Although new reports have been published about the decrease in quality of education in Flanders, the overall level of education increases further. In 1999, 25% of Flemish people were highly educated (bachelor or higher). Today this is 45% and in the age group of 25- to 34-year-olds this number rises to 53%. A new batch of engineers will also graduate from our Engineering, Biosciences and Computer Sciences Faculties this summer. I warmly welcome them and hope that they will continue to cultivate the ties with the VUB through BrEA. These young engineers are going to have great career opportunities. They will have to be the engines that will help solve the most important problems of the coming years: climate change and the energy transition. The number of engineers graduating from our university’s lags far behind the needs. I therefore invite everyone in their broad circle of acquaintances to be the 'influencer' who motivates the youth to choose the STEM directions and if possible, for the engineering profession. At BrEA we continue our efforts to strengthen our network and the sense of belonging among the alumni. In the past period we organised the following activities: Career Development Events, How to financially compare job offers and Introduction to the art of communication; along the cultural/relaxing side, engineers@themovies, yoga and work/life balance, the alumni event materials and a guided visit to the renovated Braem building, the rectorate. Make a note of the following activities in your calendar: Saturday 24 September BBQ on campus Etterbeek, Wednesday 26 October Symposium.
